NATURAL OPPORTUNITIES

Storsanden (The beach) in the west is perhaps the most attractive outdoor area in the municipality of Hammerfest, widely used by locals and tourists as hiking terrain and recreation area. The beach area is magnificent with a special, desert-like landscape, several hundred meters wide from the shoreline, with small valleys and dunes suitable for play, sports, camping and hiking. If you are moving out into the sea, kiting is recommended. Good wind conditions, – both on the east and west sides of the property.

The property has great development potential for versatile outdoor living and other experiences; eg. Northern lights and deep-sea fishing tourism. The area outside Sørøya is rightly called the realm of big fish, and in Akkarfjord there are opportunities to rent sturdy boats that quickly bring people and gear out to the fishing fields. Eager anglers often get halibut on the hook.

HISTORY

Sørøya has some of the oldest traces of people in Norway. The first written information about the place Akkarfjord is in older landbooks from 1567. With few exceptions there was a permanent settlement around the whole of Sørøya in the period 1865 to 1959. Small farming and fishing were the most common activities. People had reindeer both stationary on the island and in recent times as part of the mainland migration pattern. In addition, cow, sheep and goat holdings in all the major fjords depended on natural pastures.

More recently, World War II events have left traces. The entire population and several generations since have been marked by the ravages of the Germans in the fall of 1944. But the village rebuilt from the ashes, and at Eidegården this story still sits in the walls of all the buildings.
